Feature Artisan: The Design Den

Debbie, owner of the Design Den, is a jewellery designer and a lampwork artist.

She has been making her own glass beads since 2008.  Her work displays her love for the variety of glass colors, the textures created and the limitless design potential of making her own beads. “My love of lampworking inspires my jewellery.”

“My journey into lampworking started with a 3 hour lesson with a local lampwork artist.  Since then I’ve spent many hours practicing the various techniques I’ve learned.  When I look back at some of my “first” beads, I smile and think of how my beads have evolved and I know the future possibilities are endless. I continue to expand my knowledge of beadmaking by attending workshops and taking lessons with other artists.

Lately I find myself drawn to the metal work end of jewellery making.  I make the majority of all my metal bead caps, earwires, necklace bails and bracelet components.   I find it a very satisfying feeling when I can say that my one-of-a-kind piece is also 100% handmade.”

Feature Artisan: Valda Bardell

Valda Bardell has been making special handmade items for as long as she can remember. She learned to sew and knit when she was a small child. In addition to currently making various Christmas ornaments, for the last 5 years she has specialized in making sock monkeys. The monkeying around is a family trait as both her Mom (in Nova Scotia) and her sister in Bowling Green, Kentucky enjoy producing these lovable creatures too. She makes traditional sock monkeys as well as monkeys from wild and wacky socks. Some monkeys even have little outfits…pirates, divas, and most recently, a bride and groom. She has even made miniature sock monkeys to hang on the tree at Christmas!

Whether they are traditional or dressed as a princesses, they each have their own personalities, you might just want to take them all home!

We are very excited to have Valda as a returning Artisan at this year’s Gifts Galore Show!

Feature Artisan: Deb V Designs

Deb works with raw materials (sheet metal and wire) and transforms them into something that can be treasured for years.

The mix of ancient and modern techniques such as enameling, etching, repousse, forging, fold forming, Hiirodo Red copper patina, wire wrapping are found in her designs giving them their own originality. Due to the nature of being handmade, each piece is unique.

Over the years my fascination with wire art jewelry has led me to pursue and experiment with different methods of manipulating wire and metal. Torch fired enameling, fold forming, and incorporating traditional solder work are some of the techniques I use. I love the transformative properties that occur when integrating these materials and techniques into my work.”

We look forward to having Deb V Designs at this year’s Gifts Galore Show!
